second, Scott listened carefully. A noise to his right had
Scott heading that way. He took a few steps, then
halted when he heard the sharp crack of a twig
breaking.
It didn t take him long to locate the source.
Zeroing in he spotted a darker patch of black, and
before the kid knew what had happened, Scott dived
into the bushes where the kid had hidden and had him
by the collar, shaking him like some rabid dog.
What the fuck do you think you re up to? he
demanded, gripping the lanky teenager by the shoulder
as he tried to pull free.
Nu, nu, nuthin . I was just lookin . The
stammered reply didn t convince Scott. From the kid s
actions and the frantic way in which he still kept trying
to free himself, Scott decided he d done more than just
look. Tightening his grip, he dragged the struggling
delinquent back across the dry, heat-affected grass to
the cabin where David was waiting.
David was livid. The dark look in his eyes and the
high color in his cheeks would have been a dead
giveaway, but he was also holding up a small camera in
a white-knuckled hand, and the second he saw Scott
pull his prize through the doorway, he rounded on him
like a man demented. What kind of sick fuck are you?
I could have you fucking arrested for this!
I didn t do nuthin . The whiny reply didn t help
matters, and as David glared at the teenager, those
green eyes flashing pure fury, Scott felt the kid cringe in
fear. Scott didn t blame him. He wouldn t want to be
on the other end of that anger.
You think this was nothing? David brandished
the camera again, his gaze flicking to Scott before
landing full force back on the teen. How would you
like it if someone filmed you with someone, then posted
it on the net?
I wasn t going to do that! Realizing his mistake
in confessing, not that he had much of an argument with
the evidence being shoved in his face, the kid fell silent.
David made a noise of disgust and glanced at Scott
again.
It s all on here. He turned the face of the
miniscreen so the frozen picture on the camera was
visible.
Scott stared at it for a moment, the relief that
David had managed to find this before the kid could do
some damage relaxing the tension in his shoulders. He
didn t get my good side. You don t look bad though.
The kid snorted, and Scott was hard-pressed not
to smack him upside the head. David, however, didn t
see the humor. Or at least it didn t look like he had. He
turned away, and after dropping the camera into his
bag, he picked up Scott s T-shirt and handed it to him.
 We re leaving.
Scott agreed. He didn t intend to spend another
minute at the caravan park, but he hesitated and
indicated the young man still cringing by the door.
What do we do with him? Though this affected him as
much as it did David, Scott was satisfied enough just to
know the contents of that camera had been
appropriated, but he wasn t sure if David wanted to
take this further.
If he gets out of my sight in the next five seconds,
I won t press charges. We ve got his camera
Hey, you can t take the camera it s mine!
Ignoring the kid s outburst, David continued,
Which, once I m satisfied all traces of us have been
erased, will be posted back. David s eyes narrowed
as he crossed his arms over his chest. Be thankful I
don t live in this country, because if I did, I d have your
balls strung up tight for the prank you pulled tonight.
Now, your five seconds are up. Fuck off.
Biting his lip to stop a full on grin at the way David
said that, Scott pulled on his shirt and shoes and picked
up his bag. The kid had gone, though Scott could hear
him mumbling about something being not fair. David still
stood with his arms crossed over his chest. He was
shaking. Hey, it s all right. We ve got the camera.
Scott dumped his bag back on the bed, then pulled
David into his arms, holding him. David s arms came
around him, clinging.
It s not that. You rushed out of here without
knowing what was out there. That idiot could have had
a knife or something.
 He didn t.
But he could have. Shit, Scott, getting that
camera back wasn t worth the danger to your life.
Don t worry about me, and anyway, I didn t get
the camera, you did, he said, pointing out that David
had to have gone outside to retrieve the camera and
could well have put himself in the same possible danger.
It was just outside the window. The kid must
have dropped it when I spotted him. David moved so
he could look up at him. The depths of his anger still
shone in his eyes. I was so fucking close too.
It took Scott all of two seconds to realize what
David meant, and when he did he couldn t stop the full-
bodied laugh that burst free. It wasn t funny, but at least
it showed David did have a sense of humor. David s
small, responding smile made Scott hug him. Odd how
he d never hugged men before, but David seemed to
bring that out in him.
We could finish it off now if you want?
David shook his head, though the movement was
tiny. Not here. I really want to get out of here.
So did Scott. He tightened his arms around David
for one more moment, then let him go. Come on, we ll
find somewhere else. He had his bag slung over his
shoulder when David put out a hand and rested it on his
arm.
Thank you for going after him. I m not quite sure
what I would have done if he hadn t dropped the
camera and had gotten away.
Other than the obvious, is there a special reason
why you wouldn t want those images on the net?
David seemed to hesitate for a moment and then
nodded. My family would make my life a living hell
more than they do already.
Chapter Four
Dawn painted the sky the color of blood, its
burnished brilliance seemingly setting the clouds on fire,
dripping tendrils of flame from one end of the horizon to
the other. Caught up in the amazing sight, David pulled
over onto the grass verge and turned off the engine
before getting out and just standing there, one hand on
the roof, the other on the edge of the door, his gaze
locked on nature s method of greeting a brand-new
day.
He needed this, a respite from his thoughts and
emotions. The distraction was perfect, giving him a
moment when there was nothing to think about but the
fierce wonder of the world around him. He stood for a
moment longer, feeling the strain of the past couple of
hours lift off his shoulders, before bending down to peer
into the passenger seat of the car.
Scott, I think you may want to see this.
Scott s long body unfurled in a languid, fluid move
that David unquestionably envied. He knew damn well
if he d fallen asleep in the cramped space of the front
seat, he would have woken with stiff muscles and
aching joints. Scott, however, seemed no worse for
wear. In fact, he seemed to have found the awkward
position no less uncomfortable than if he d slept on a
king-size bed with a soft mattress and even softer
pillows.
Blue eyes opened and smiled. Hey, babe.
David smiled back; he couldn t, not in the face of
such warmth. Hey, yourself. Take a look over there.
David nodded to indicate the view behind Scott.
Turning, Scott glanced out the side window and
whistled his appreciation. Wow, that s not something
you see every day.
I know. Beautiful, isn t it?
Scott pushed open his door and emerged,
stretching just a little before standing as David had [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
